ETIOLOGY OF FEAR
Fear and anxiety are common problems which affect a large number of people’s lives. Most individuals who suffer from phobic reactions do not share the information with friends and even family because they realize the fear is irrational.
Anxiety is excessive worry. In some cases, worry is appropriate, but with pathological anxiety the worry is about things that don’t merit worry or about imagined things that truly merit no concern.
Panic attacks are the sudden onset of terror in places where such terror is inappropriate. During an attack, the heart beats fast, people become short of breath, and they often sweat, and fear they are at death’s door.
Phobias are unreasonable fears of people, places and things that don’t engender fear in others.
Claustrophobia is the fear of being in an enclosed space, like an airplane, MRI machine, etc.
One obvious method of alleviating anxiety is to provide anxious patients with medication. This has a number of potential drawbacks which can be circumvented by psychological techniques of anxiety management.
Several of these drawbacks are worth mentioning.
•When to take the medication and how much. Often medication will not take
effect soon enough, or will remain in effect after the need is gone.
•Anxiety medication literature often warns patients not to drive after taking them. Others may not be allowed at their employment because of possible accidental injury.
• Many patients prefer not to use drugs and realize there is a danger of it
becoming a lifestyle.
An important issue is preserving the person’s sense of control over their life by allowing the patient to manage anxiety spontaneously, without resorting to external or artificial means.
In 1993, Dr. Morris became interested in helping patients who suffered from feelings of anxiety and panic during the MRI procedure.
Over the next two years
he supervised research of over
700 severely claustrophobic patients,
and developed techniques which produced remarkable results.
This therapy became known as “ClaustroCare” and has been taught to healthcare professionals in hospitals and radiology centers across the United States.
